Last Saturday’s game between Southampton and Chelsea ended with a win for Southampton and it was mainly for the goal scored by James Ward-Prowse. He closed in on a record set by David Beckham, the legend of Manchester United. The winning goal was executed by James as a free kick. This was seen by many as close to the tally set by David Beckham.

Many are now talking about how James Ward-Prowse is close to the record set by David Beckham. He has now scored from a total of 17 free kicks during Premier League matches. This sets him one goal behind David Beckham who is regarded as the Goldenballs bearer. The free-kick goal was indeed a stunning win that James Ward-Prowse provided his team. John Stones is expected to miss out as Manchester City host Manchester United at the Etihad on Sunday. The centre-back was forced off with what appeared to be a hamstring injury while playing for England against Germany during the international break and while there has been no confirmation of the issue, it is unlikely he features in the derby.

Better news for City is that Aymeric Laporte has taken part in first-team training, with the centre-back yet to play this season after undergoing knee surgery in the summer. He is closing in on a return, though this weekend will come too soon. Kalvin Phillips is a longer-term absentee, and he faces a race to recover from shoulder surgery in time for the World Cup. While Manuel Akanji has been impressive since arriving from Borussia Dortmund, Nathan Ake could be the preferred partner for Ruben Dias in defence. Kyle Walker missed the trip to Wolves before the international break but is fully fit again. Continue reading

David Beckham has sent his congratulations to his son after Romeo scored a free-kick reminiscent of his famous father. Beckham senior is celebrated as one of the best free-kick takers of all time, having curled in numerous efforts for England, Manchester United, Real Madrid and LA Galaxy – and it seems he has passed on the skillet. Romeo started his football career at Arsenal’s academy but has been given his start at Inter Miami – the club which is part-owned by his father. The 19-year-old is currently playing for the Florida side’s second-string while he develops his game, and that is where his viral free-kick came from.

Romeo’s strike came in Inter Miami II’s 3-1 win over Orlando City II in the MLS Next Pro League. With his team 2-1 up and the game nearing its end, Romeo took his opportunity to net his first goal for the club when they won a free-kick 25 yards out. He ran up to the ball in a manner which echoed his dad, struck it nicely to get the ball over the wall and into the bottom corner. While it wasn’t a perfect imitation of David Beckham’s style, as he was best known for finding the top corner, it was an eye-catching way to get off the mark. Continue reading

Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse has been backed to break the free-kick record in the Premier League currently held by English football icon David Beckham after his sensational long-range free-kick during last weekend’s 3-1 loss at Wolves. England international Ward-Prowse was backed by Ex-Liverpool and Fulham midfielder Danny Murphy while he was on the BBC Match of the Day.

Murphy while speaking on the sensational free-kick from Southampton skipper Ward-Prowse said it was one of the best free-kicks he has seen and that it was a phenomenal effort. Speaking further, the BBC pundit said that Ward-Prowse hit the valve like Cristiano Ronaldo occasionally does in the past and it flew into the back of the net. Ward-Prowse left Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa with no chance of saving the ball as he halved the deficit with six minutes remaining on the clock after the hosts had taken a two-goal lead through goals from Raul Jimenez (penalty) and skipper ConorCoady.
